WHY CMA DATA MATTERS

Need CMA Data for Your Bank Loan Proposal?

When a business approaches a bank for a new working capital facility, enhancement of existing limits, renewal, term loan or expansion finance, the banker needs more than just your Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Account.

The Bank Wants to Understand the Financial Logic Behind Your Proposal

CMA Data helps present your past performance, current financial position and projected financial performance in a structured way so that the proposed borrowing requirement can be properly analysed.

01
How Much Finance Does the Business Actually Require?

The proposed bank limit should be connected with the operating cycle, projected turnover and actual funding gap of the business.

02
Are the Projected Sales & Profitability Reasonable?

Turnover growth, margins and operating expenses should be supported by realistic business assumptions instead of arbitrary increases.

03
Is the Working Capital Requirement Properly Assessed?

Inventory, receivables, creditors and other current assets and liabilities directly affect the amount of working capital required.

04
Can the Business Service the Proposed Debt?

Interest cost, repayment obligations, cash generation and other financial commitments should remain consistent with the projected profitability and cash flow.

PROFESSIONAL CMA PREPARATION

Your Projections Should Be Capable of Being Explained to Your Banker.

UNDERSTANDING CMA DATA

What Is CMA Data?

CMA Data is a structured presentation of the financial position, past performance and projected financial performance of a business for credit assessment by banks and financial institutions.

Depending upon the nature of the proposal and the requirements of the lender, CMA Data may include historical financial information, current-year estimates and projected financial statements for future years.

It helps the banker understand whether the projected turnover, profitability, working capital requirement, borrowing structure and repayment capacity are financially reasonable.

01
Past Performance Historical turnover, profitability, assets, liabilities and existing borrowing.
02
Current Position Latest financial position, provisional figures and existing banking facilities.
03
Future Projections Projected sales, profitability, working capital, borrowings and financial ratios.
!
IMPORTANT

CMA Data Should Tell One Consistent Financial Story.

Sales, profitability, inventory, receivables, creditors, borrowing, interest and repayment should logically connect with each other.

PROFESSIONAL CMA DATA PREPARATION Business Understanding → Financial Assumptions → Structured Projections → CMA Data

A stronger CMA presentation starts with understanding how the business actually earns, invests and uses working capital.

WORKING CAPITAL FINANCE

CMA Data for Working Capital & Cash Credit Limits

A profitable business can still face a significant funding gap when money remains blocked in inventory, receivables and the operating cycle. CMA Data helps present this requirement in a structured financial manner.

THE KEY QUESTION

Why Does Your Business Need This Level of Working Capital Finance?

The proposed Cash Credit or OD limit should be supported by the expected turnover, inventory level, receivable period, creditor support and actual funding gap of the business.

WORKING CAPITAL CYCLE

How Funds Move Through the Business

01
Purchase / Raw Material

Funds are first deployed into raw material, stock or trading inventory.

02
Inventory / Production

Capital remains blocked during production, processing and stock holding.

03
Sales & Receivables

Credit sales create debtors until customers make payment.

04
Cash Realisation

Cash returns to the business and the operating cycle starts again.

PROFESSIONAL APPROACH

We Do Not Simply Insert the Desired CC Limit Into the CMA

The proposed borrowing should emerge logically from the projected business activity and operating cycle.

01
Understand the Business

Review the nature of operations, sales pattern, procurement and customer-credit terms.

02
Estimate Current Assets

Project inventory, receivables, cash and other current assets based on realistic assumptions.

03
Assess Current Liabilities

Consider creditor support and other current liabilities available to fund operations.

04
Identify the Funding Gap

Understand how much of the working capital gap needs to be supported through bank finance.

SEEKING ENHANCEMENT OF AN EXISTING LIMIT?

A Higher Bank Limit Should Have a Clear Financial Justification

If your existing Cash Credit or OD limit is no longer sufficient, the projections should explain what has changed — such as higher turnover, increased raw-material prices, larger inventory, longer receivable periods, new products, new markets or expansion in operations.

TERM LOAN & EXPANSION FINANCE

CMA Data for Term Loan & Business Expansion Proposals

When a business is planning new machinery, capacity expansion, additional production lines or other capital expenditure, the financial projections should clearly demonstrate how the proposed investment will affect revenue, profitability, cash generation and loan repayment capacity.

FINANCIAL FEASIBILITY MATTERS

A Term Loan Projection Should Explain How the Investment Will Be Repaid

The projections should connect project cost, means of finance, capacity utilisation, expected revenue, operating expenses, interest, depreciation and repayment obligations into one consistent financial model.

01
Project Cost

Machinery, civil work, installation, preliminary expenses, margin and other capital expenditure.

02
%
Means of Finance

Promoter contribution, proposed term loan and other legitimate sources of project funding.

03
Operating Growth

Capacity utilisation, additional turnover, operating expenses and expected profitability.

04
Debt Servicing

Interest, repayment obligations, cash accruals and DSCR where applicable.

PROJECTIONS SHOULD BE EXPLAINABLE

Expansion Finance Requires More Than Showing Higher Future Sales

A stronger proposal explains where the additional turnover will come from and whether the operating and financing assumptions support it.

Capacity & Production

Revenue assumptions linked with realistic capacity utilisation.

Sales & Margins

Projected turnover and margins aligned with the business model.

Interest & Depreciation

Financing cost and depreciation reflected in projected profitability.

Cash Accruals

Expected cash generation reviewed against debt obligations.

DPR
WHEN CMA DATA ALONE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH

Larger Term Loan Proposals May Require a Detailed Project Report

Where the bank requires a detailed explanation of the project, promoter background, market, machinery, project cost, implementation, profitability, repayment and financial feasibility, a Bank Finance DPR may be more appropriate along with CMA Data.

FINANCIAL PROJECTIONS & ANALYSIS

Financial Projections That Can Be Explained to Your Banker

A projection should not only look attractive in an Excel sheet. The underlying assumptions should be reasonable, internally consistent and capable of being explained during the bank’s credit appraisal.

%
NUMBERS MUST CONNECT

Every Major Projection Should Have a Financial & Business Basis

If turnover increases significantly, the CMA should also consider the corresponding effect on production, inventory, receivables, creditors, operating expenses, working capital and bank borrowing.

01
Why Is Turnover Expected to Increase?

Growth projections may need support from additional capacity, new customers, geographic expansion, new products or other identifiable business drivers.

02
Why Will Profitability Improve or Change?

Gross margin and operating profit assumptions should be consistent with expected pricing, product mix, input costs and operating expenses.

03
How Will Growth Affect Working Capital?

Higher turnover can also require more inventory, larger receivables and additional bank finance unless the operating cycle improves.

04
Can the Proposed Debt Be Serviced?

Interest, instalments and other financial commitments should remain compatible with projected profitability and cash generation.

FINANCIAL CONSISTENCY

One Assumption Can Affect Several CMA Statements

This is why projected Profit & Loss Account, Balance Sheet, working capital assessment, cash flow and borrowing should not be prepared independently of each other.

Sales Growth Projected turnover
Inventory & Debtors Current assets
Funding Gap Working capital need
%
Interest Cost Finance expense
Profit & Cash Flow Repayment ability
OUR PROFESSIONAL APPROACH

The Objective Is Not to Artificially Manipulate Financial Ratios

Our objective is to identify whether the assumptions create a financially sustainable proposal and, where required, discuss legitimate changes in the business plan, funding structure, promoter contribution or operating cycle.

THINK FROM THE BANKER’S PERSPECTIVE

Can You Explain the Numbers if the Banker Asks “Why?”

Why is projected turnover increasing?
Why is the proposed bank limit required?
Why are inventory or debtor days changing?
How will additional debt be repaid?
PROMOTER CONTRIBUTION & FUNDING STRUCTURE

Planning Promoter Contribution & Margin for Your Bank Proposal

In many business-finance proposals, the borrower is expected to bring an appropriate level of promoter contribution or margin. The amount, source and timing of this contribution should fit logically with the overall project cost and proposed bank finance.

A COMMON BORROWER QUESTION

How Much Money Do I Need to Bring From My Own Sources?

There is no single percentage that applies to every proposal. The appropriate funding structure depends upon the type of facility, project cost, business profile, lender requirements, existing financial position and nature of the assets being financed.

BASIC FUNDING STRUCTURE

How the Proposal May Be Financially Structured

01
Total Requirement

Project cost, machinery, working capital or other eligible business requirement.

=
02
P
Promoter Contribution

The borrower’s own eligible contribution towards the proposed requirement.

+
03
B
Bank Finance

Proposed term loan, working capital or other sanctioned credit facilities.

SOURCE & DOCUMENTATION

Promoter Contribution Should Be Capable of Being Supported

Depending upon the proposal and requirements of the concerned bank, supporting information may be required to explain how the promoter proposes to bring the contribution.

01
Existing Business Funds

Available internal resources may form part of the contribution, subject to the financial position and lender’s assessment.

02
Fresh Capital Introduction

Promoters may propose additional capital or funds from legitimate and identifiable sources.

03
Accruals & Internal Generation

In suitable cases, projected or available business accruals may be relevant to the funding structure.

04
Other Legitimate Sources

Other proposed sources should be properly documented and remain subject to acceptance by the lender.

!
IMPORTANT PROFESSIONAL CLARIFICATION

We Assist With Planning — We Do Not Arrange Promoter Contribution

Our role is to assist in understanding the proposed funding structure, planning the source and timing of promoter contribution and helping present the relevant financial information appropriately. We do not arrange funds, provide promoter contribution or guarantee that any particular source will be accepted by the bank.

BUSINESS-SPECIFIC CMA PREPARATION

CMA Data Should Reflect Your Actual Business Model

A manufacturing company, trader, contractor, service provider, hospital, hotel or food-processing unit cannot always be projected using the same assumptions. Every business has its own operating cycle, cost structure and financing requirement.

ONE FORMAT — DIFFERENT BUSINESS LOGIC

The Financial Assumptions Should Change With the Nature of the Business

The CMA format may appear similar, but the logic behind inventory, receivables, creditors, capacity utilisation, margins and working capital can differ significantly from one industry to another.

01
MFG

Manufacturing Businesses

Manufacturing projections may require detailed consideration of raw material, work-in-process, finished goods, production capacity, manufacturing expenses and capacity utilisation.

Raw Material WIP Capacity
02
TRD

Trading Businesses

Trading businesses may have relatively simple production assumptions but can require careful analysis of stock holding, customer credit, supplier credit and gross trading margins.

Stock Debtors Creditors
03
SRV

Service Businesses

Service businesses may have limited inventory but significant receivables, manpower expenses and operating costs that affect liquidity and working capital requirements.

Receivables Payroll Overheads
04
PRJ

Contractors & Project Businesses

Project-based businesses may involve work-in-progress, milestone billing, retention money, mobilisation advances and uneven cash flows across different stages of execution.

WIP Retention Billing Cycle
DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES — DIFFERENT FINANCIAL DRIVERS

The Same Turnover Can Require Very Different Levels of Bank Finance

Two businesses with similar annual sales may have completely different working capital requirements depending upon inventory days, receivable cycles, supplier credit, operating margins and seasonality.

BUSINESS A Faster Operating Cycle
Inventory Holding Lower
Receivable Period Shorter
Supplier Credit Better
Potentially Lower Working Capital Requirement
VS
BUSINESS B Longer Operating Cycle
Inventory Holding Higher
Receivable Period Longer
Supplier Credit Limited
Potentially Higher Working Capital Requirement
CA
SUITABLE FOR SERIOUS BANK FINANCE PROPOSALS

This Business-Specific Approach Becomes More Important as the Proposal Size Increases

For larger credit proposals, generic projections may fail to explain the actual economics of the business. We therefore focus on aligning the CMA assumptions with the commercial realities of the enterprise and the proposed funding requirement.

AFTER THE CMA IS SUBMITTED

Your Banker May Ask Questions About the Numbers

During credit appraisal, the banker may seek clarification regarding projected turnover, profitability, working capital, borrowings, promoter contribution, repayment capacity or differences between projections and actual performance.

Review the assumptions supporting projected business growth and how those assumptions were reflected in the CMA.

02 “Why Is the CC Limit Being Enhanced?”

Explain the relationship between higher operations, current assets and the additional working capital requirement.

03 “Why Has the Margin Changed?”

Review changes in pricing, product mix, input costs or operating expenses affecting profitability.

04 “How Will the Loan Be Repaid?”

Explain projected cash accruals, debt servicing and repayment assumptions where applicable.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About CMA Data Preparation Services

Before engaging us, you may want clarity regarding documents, professional fees, timelines, revisions, 12-month support and the difference between CMA Data and a complete Bank Finance DPR.

01 What is included in your CMA Data Preparation Service? +

Depending upon the assignment, our professional service may include review of historical financial information, projected Profit & Loss Account, projected Balance Sheet, working capital assessment, financial ratios, projected borrowings, cash-flow analysis, major financial assumptions and related CMA schedules.

The engagement also includes reasonable CMA-related post-preparation support for up to 12 months for substantially the same underlying finance proposal.

02 What does the 12 months support include? +

The support generally covers reasonable CMA-related clarifications, banker observations, correction of errors, explanation of projections and reasonable revisions arising during appraisal of substantially the same finance proposal.

A completely new proposal, different borrowing entity, material change in project size, fresh DPR or major financial restructuring may require a separate professional engagement.

03 What are your professional fees for CMA Data preparation? +

Our professional fee for CMA Data Preparation Services starts from ₹25,000. The final fee depends upon the size of the business, type of banking facility, complexity of projections, quality of available financial information, number of entities and overall assignment scope.

04 What are the payment terms? +

Our standard payment structure is 30% advance at commencement.

The remaining 70% is payable after submission of the first complete draft and client review, but before finalisation and release of the final CMA Data.

05 Which documents are required to start the CMA assignment? +

Documents normally depend upon the nature of the proposal, but may include recent audited financial statements, provisional financial figures, GST or turnover information, details of existing bank facilities, loan repayment details and major assumptions regarding future business performance.

You do not need to organise everything before contacting us. We can first understand your requirement and provide a case-specific document checklist.

06 Can you prepare CMA Data for CC limit enhancement or renewal? +

Yes. CMA Data can be prepared for annual renewal of existing banking facilities, enhancement of Cash Credit or OD limits, new working capital requirements and other suitable bank-finance proposals.

For enhancement cases, the projections should logically explain why additional finance is required, such as increased turnover, higher inventory, receivables, expansion or changes in the operating cycle.

07 Can you prepare CMA Data for a term-loan proposal? +

Yes. Depending upon the proposal, financial projections can incorporate proposed capital expenditure, additional capacity, term-loan borrowing, interest, repayment obligations and projected cash generation.

Where the proposal involves a substantial new project or major expansion, a complete Bank Finance DPR along with CMA Data may be more appropriate.

08 What is the difference between CMA Data and a Bank Finance DPR? +

CMA Data primarily focuses on financial statements, projections, working capital, ratios and credit assessment.

A Detailed Project Report normally provides a broader presentation covering the business, promoter, project concept, market, machinery, project cost, means of finance, implementation, profitability and overall financial feasibility.

09 Can the entire CMA assignment be completed online? +

Yes. In most cases, the complete engagement can be handled remotely. Documents can be shared digitally, discussions can be conducted online or through WhatsApp and completed financial statements can be delivered electronically.

This enables us to assist businesses across India.

10 Do you guarantee sanction of the bank loan? +

No. We provide professional assistance in preparing, structuring and explaining the financial information relating to the proposal.

Loan sanction remains entirely at the discretion of the bank or financial institution, which independently evaluates credit eligibility, security, promoter contribution, repayment capacity, banking conduct and other applicable factors.
