Alpha type’s characteristics

When mixed with water, Alpha type particles dissolve relatively little, unlike Beta type particles. It takes a lot less water to make a viable slurry. As a result, Alpha can make casts denser and have a better compressive strength while using less water than is required for recrystallisation.

Beta type’s characteristics

Because the initial setting happens too late and the final setting occurs too early, the beta type without additives is not suited for plastering. Furthermore, its particle size distribution is incompatible with plaster.

Market & Demand Aspects

Building construction activity is increasing, necessitating vast volumes of Plaster of Paris. Mold and model makers also see an increase in demand for the product. A majority of studies and establishments engaged in making statutes and interior decoration, decorative plasterboards for false ceilings and other purposes, are creating a lot of demand for plaster of Paris, which creates a lot of room for new units to open up in this line of business. They’re commonly used to write on blackboards and make marks on any coloured surface.

Pharmaceutical-grade hospitals and dental laboratories Hospitals and clinics utilise orthopaedic plasters for all forms of orthopaedic cast work, such as surgical casts and orthopaedic bandages.

Product & Its Application

Ceramic industry: Dishes, sanitary ware, art ware, stoneware, and other ceramic objects are made with this material. The preferred moulding plaster, particularly for ceramics, is a mixture of Alpha and Beta plaster. In the ceramics business, plaster of Paris is used for three different uses. Making a model:

This necessitates a dense, consistent plaster of Paris that can be carved easily—making plastic clay moulds for pressing and jiggering shapes. Chemical porcelain is a white vitrified dense clear substance with or without glaze used to make moulds for slip casting pottery. Electrical insulators and low tension porcelain insulators in sanitary wares, decorative moulding and building interior elements, hospitals and dental laboratories-Pharmaceutical Grade.

Art plasters are essentially decorative moulding plasters that have been changed to increase surface hardness, chip resistance and limit paint absorption in casts made from this material. Moulding plasters are used in the construction of columns and other architectural interior components. According to the manufacturer, chalk crayons are round and tapering shape sticks of various colours manufactured of plaster of Paris.

Dental laboratories use both Alpha and Beta plasters.

Raw Material

Gypsum, maleic anhydride, and sodium hydroxide are the most important raw materials. NATURAL GYPSUM, MARINE GYPSUM, DRIED GYPSUM, and phospho GYPSUM are all types of gypsum.

Manufacturing Process

Plaster of Paris is made from gypsum, which is the most basic raw element. These are cleaned and rinsed to remove contaminants before being dried in the sun and pulverised. Light diesel oil/firewood/coal is used for calcining gypsum particles in a rotary drum calcinatory. The low-pressure burner is capable of reaching calcination temperatures ranging from 1600 to 1800 degrees Celsius.

The calcination process takes around 2 hours and removes 112 molecules of water to get the desired characteristics. The calcined powder is filtered through 150 mesh and stored in airtight polythene sealed gunny bags after cooling. This technology is available locally and from the Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee (UP).
