Coir fibre comes from a portion of the coconut palm seed-pod and, is 100 percent natural and originated from the coconut’s palm outer husk. Mature fibres contain less cellulose than cotton or flax, than lignin and woody products. This strengthens coircoir but makes it less flexible.

Each fibre cell is thick and hollow with thick cellulose walls. They are pale but toughened and yellowed when a layer of lignin is laid on their walls later. More lignin and less cellulose than fibre like linen and cotton are in fresh brown coir fibres. They consist of microscopic threads of less than 0.05 inches (1.3 mm), each of which has a diameter of 10 to 20 microns. Smoother, fine, but also weaker, is white fibre. The coir fibres, the only natural fabric resistant to salty water damage, are relatively waterproof.

In a river or water-filled pit for a maximum of 10 months, immature husks are hung, and microorganisms break down the tissues of plants around the fibres during this time to release them – a process is known as retting. The segment of the husk is next crushed by hand to separate the long, dried and cleansed fibres. Cleansed fibre is ready using a simple one-handed technique or a spinning wheel to make yarn.

Process of Manufacture

Manufacture of Coir Brushes

The fibre tufts are then forced into the wooden material’s holes by hammering with a punch and hammer into the bending parts of the GI wire. The entire holes in the wood are filled with tufts of fibre. The top parts of the brush will then be shared with a top shearing machine or scissors by hand.

Uses or Applications

Different products like brushes, doormats, mattresses, and sacking use brown coircoir in manufacturing. Twine is also made from coircoir using little amount. Curled brown coir fibre pads are designed and cut to fill mattresses and be used in erosion control along banks and slopes of the river (machine technology that matches the fibres together). The rubber latex is utilised to bind the fibres (rubberized coircoir), a substantial share for brown coir padding in the European car sector. The coircoir is used as timber padding. The material is also utilised for packaging and insulation. White coircoir is used mostly in the production of clothing. Mats constructed of coir fibres with hand or machine cloth are made of the finer degrees of the bristle and white fibres. Coir is a replacement for milled peat moose, as it’s free of fungus spores and bacteria.
