Banana Paper-Making Market Opportunities

Banana is one of the most important crops in India. Our country produces bananas in large quantities. However, after fruit harvest, it generates huge amounts of waste. This waste is about 60 to 80 tonnes per tractor of biomass (pseudostem, leaves, suckers, etc.).

Currently, this biomass is discarded as waste. Typically farmers apply labor to cut or uproot pseudo sites and throw them on the side of the road. For this, a farmer will have to invest Rs. 10,000 per acre as labor charge for cutting and removing the plant from the farm. Instead of spending money, they can now earn from their banana waste.

Navsari Agricultural University (NAU) in Gujarat has standardized the process of making high-value paper from banana fiber with a patent registration. The paper has been tested at the Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCT).

Paper made of fiber has a shelf life of over 100 years. Additionally, the banana is the strongest among the long fibers found among natural fibers. Even, you can fold the paper up to 3,000 times. The university has filed five different patents for various uses of the banana plant, including making yarn for textiles, paper, and candy.

Banana Powder Making Business also has huge market demand. You can thus start banana powder manufacturing in India under same roof as the major raw material is banana only in these two start-ups. You can explore banana powder project report and know more about this venture.

Eco-Friendly Banana Paper

  • The organic banana papers made from tree-free agricultural bio-products which make wonderful paper for supporting laser printers and have inkjet printers. Both agricultural by-products of plantations which create solid waste issues all across the world and using this to make paper helps out combat these issues.
  • On one hand, you all are saving trees. The other you help out for up cycle and it reduces waste and then stops burning. The banana paper is a perfect example of how up cycling can help it out in change on planet. The utilization of the banana papers aids which is conserving our natural resources and also creating sustainable paper. The acid-free paper will not be disintegrate or yellow over time. The method for converting banana stumps into paper and therefore it encourages sustainability and clean paper. Banana Paper is award-winning paper in industry as it saves trees and its 100 % sustainable.

Properties of Banana Paper

  • The raw banana paper has a coarse surface due to the presence of the hemicellulose, lignin, and the other waxy components in fiber. Hemicellulose has been located between and within cellulose fibrils and it has incorporated into cellulose structure.
  • Fiber or pulp having high hemicellulose content has a high maximum tensile strength and low maximum tear index. Cellulosic fibers enclose the outside of cellulose fibers, acting as the natural binders.
  • Long fibre bundles can be regarded as the key component in the banana paper. Length is also a significant fibre property; longer fibres contain more fibre joints. The fiber joints are contributed to have a stronger network of fibers. The long fiber manufactured the papers which are usually having better strength properties with short fiber manufactured papers.
  • Banana fiber is varied in different weights and the thickness, depending on a specific part of the banana stem which is used for it. Sturdy, thick fibers will be taken from the outer sheaths, and softer fibers which can be extracted from inner sheaths.

Uses Of Banana Paper

  • Banana paper is used in the two different senses which refers to a paper made from the bark of a banana tree, which is mainly used for artistic purposes, or a paper made from banana fiber, which has been obtained from an industrialized process with the stem and the no utilizable fruits. This paper can either be a hand-made one or made by an industrialized machine.
  • Banana fiber is natural fiber which is having high strength; it can be blended easily with cotton fiber or some other synthetic fibers to produce blended fabric and textiles. It has been mainly used by the cottage industry in Southern India at the present.
  • Banana Fiber finds use in high-quality security/ currency paper, packing cloth for agriculture produce, ships towing ropes, wet drilling cables and many more.
  • The Philippines and Japan are countries that are using banana fibre on a large scale for the commercial production of a variety of textile items.

Life of A Banana Tree

One of the biggest misconceptions about bananas is what happens to the plant after the fruit has been harvested. Unlike the fruits apple, pear, and some other varieties of hardwood fruit-bearing trees, banana plants not only fruit once in their lifetime, and then they have naturally died and then decayed away. Without going into full anatomy lessons, bananas have much different growing than anything we are accustomed to. The stem of this plant is what looks like the trunk of the ‘tree’, but it’s actually tightly packed leaf sheaths that overlap when it grows bigger and bigger.

The most fascinating aspect though has to be the creeping underground stem and root system. It allows five or more generations of the fruit-bearing banana stems to simultaneously grow at once.

The plant is categorized as a ‘tree-like perennial herb’ because the parent stem dies as naturally as after it bears fruit, and a new “sucker” takes over as the parent plant. This is sometimes hard to visualize, but it shows that the smaller offshoots already emerging into the soil and waiting for their turn to bathe in the sun.

Market Demand for Banana Paper

The global size of the banana paper is projected for reaching 117.97 million by 2023, as per to Technavio, which is a well-known global market research firm. Banana paper market is expanding because of the growing number of uses of the banana paper such as paper pens, business cards, greeting cards, notebooks, and other stationery items. The market is specifically expanding rapidly in Europe, South America, North America as well as Asia-Pacific. An expanding banana paper market is further supported by low production cost with the Factors contributing to the low production cost include relatively inexpensive banana fiber extraction machinery and ease of operation of these machines by unskilled workers.

Properties of Banana Fiber

As esteemed inventors have pointed out, numerous desirable characteristics of banana fiber make it preferable to other textiles beyond potential supply from our love for the sweet fruit:

  • Highly strong fibre
  • Mixes well with other fibres to form 3. composites
  • Lightweight
  • Biodegradable
  • Rapidly Renewable
  • Water-resistant
  • Flame-resistant
  • Naturally beautiful

While the following list does not exhaust the positive benefits of banana fibre, it offers evidence for increasing the adoption of banana fibre products.

Benefits of Banana Paper

After bananas are harvested from its plantations, stems and trunks are discarded. In addition, these parts contain usually available sources of fibers. If scrapped stems of banana plant and trunks are utilized, this leads to a decrease in an synthetic fiber production.

Synthetic fibre production requires extra energy, fertilizer, and many chemicals too. Banana paper does not require any kind of chemicals which are used during manufacturing.

The banana paper has also more durability and also has a longer lifetime than any conventional paper. Therefore, the manufacturing of banana paper does not do any environmental pollution.

Banana paper also reduces pollution by having lower disposal costs and it has less agricultural waste which enters into landfills and rivers.

The production of a banana paper comprises less energy which is compared to traditional paper production as the traditional paper industry is one of the largest sources of the energy consumption. Therefore, banana paper is much less impactful on natural resources, such as forests.

Banana Paper Market Prospects

  • Technology includes the scientific processes like machinery and equipment necessary to convert the banana tree trunk into paper. This technology is very unique and it fits between conventional pulp and paper technology which is lumber veneering and has custom wood technologies.
  • A technology turning the banana waste into paper is geared up to go commercial. It has numerous distinct markets with advantages and has a commercially viable cost structure, a superior product and positive environmental benefits. Recycled Paper is made from the both virgin tree-fibers and recycled fibers with one exception, and that is 100 % of post-consumer paper which has been made from 100 %recycled fibers. Therefore, trees are still cut to make recycled paper.
  • Banana papermaking seems to be the only avenue for utilizing sustainable resources more appropriately. If all banana plants were harvested and the fiber extracted from tree trunk, nearly 2.1 lakh tons of fiber would be available per annum, yielding 1.65 lakh tons of the handmade paper. Bearing in mind which is India’s production of handmade was estimated to be a mere 27,000 tons in 2002- 2003, with the main raw material being cotton rags.

Banana Paper Making Cost

Though the total cost of the manufacturing banana paper is high as Rs 200 per kg, a manufacturer often has profit margin of the Rs 200-220 per kg, with the handmade paper selling Rs 400-420 per kg. The paper’s high value-added products like stationary items, gift wrappers and envelopes and stationery fetch quite higher prices. There are several Patents in Pulping, Paper making and its related fields

Automatic paper production, Semi-automatic paper production and cottage-level technologies have been practised for wide variations in Investment Levels. A project for 3 tons/ month is possible in the handmade process. A project with a simple machinery to produce about 30 tons/ year of Paper and Boards need an investment of around 10 lakhs. Whereas, a 30 tons per day project might require an investment of almost 10 crores.

How Do I Make Banana Paper?

After the banana is harvested, all that’s left on the plants are the stems or pseudo stems. Clearing stems to plant new crops is an expensive process for farmers. Today, fruit farmers are making money by selling the stems for paper manufacture. It requires no chemicals, just boiling water and a small bit of electricity to mix the pulp. Making banana paper is a very eco-friendly process that you can do it at home in the afternoon or in a large-scale banana paper-making industry.

1st step: Chop stems into 1-inch long pieces. Place them in a large cauldron or a pot. Fill the pot with some water so those pieces are all immersed and/or floating.

2nd Step: Bring water to boil on the stovetop or any open flame outdoors. Stir the pot constantly and Boil for 30 minutes. After some time remove it from the heating source.

3rd Step: Beat the stems by using an electric mixer until the fibres have separated. After the mixture is now cool, then use your hands to break them up. The mix should have a pulpy and sludgy consistency.

4th Step: Set a window screen between the two sawhorses placed outdoors. Rest the edges of the screen on sawhorses so it won’t be tipped over, with plenty of screens free of obstructions.

5th Step: Ladle the pulp mixture on the screen and spread some pulp lightly over the screen to a consistent thickness of 1 millimeter or about 2/5 inch. Smooth the pulp by having a small spatula if needed. Allow the moisture to drip off.

6th Step: Place a piece of smooth wood over the screen when the paper is now about halfway to drying. Lay books or rocks on the wood. This will help give your paper a quite smooth finishing. Leave it to dry.

7th Step: Remove weights and wood. Check to see if the paper is mostly dry to the touch. It may take a maximum of 8 to 12 hours for getting to this point. Peel out paper from the screen and hang it on a line with the clothespins to dry completely. In the time of dry climates, it takes one day to dry while it may take two days in more humid climates.
